Our Prefab Ablution Block Range

One of the things our customers love is that we don’t make you start from scratch. We’ve already done the hard work of developing a proven range of ablution block designs that cover the most common requirements across New Zealand worksites, events, and facilities. Every unit is built with quality materials and comes ready to go.

Here’s what’s available right now:

Unit 0 – Disabled Access Toilet: A fully accessible standalone unit with handrails and wheelchair-friendly access. Perfect for ensuring your site meets accessibility requirements from day one.

Unit 1 – Single Pan Ablution (1.8m x 1.2m): Our most compact option. Ideal for small crews, supplementary facilities, or tight sites where space is limited.

Unit 2 – Male/Female Dual Pan Ablution (2.4m x 1.8m): Separate male and female facilities in one efficient unit. A popular choice for sites that need gender-separated amenities without a large footprint.

Unit 3 – Single Pan + Single Urinal (2.4m x 1.8m): Adds a urinal alongside a standard pan to reduce wait times on sites with predominantly male crews.

Unit 4 – Dual Pan + Single Urinal: Stepping up the capacity with two pans and a urinal, built for busier sites that need a bit more throughput.

Unit 5 – M/F Single Pan + Single Pan & Urinal: A smart split configuration that gives both male and female users their own dedicated space.

Unit 6 – M/F Single Pan + Single Pan & Dual Urinal: Increases male-side capacity with dual urinals while maintaining separate female facilities.

Unit 7 – M/F Single Pan + Dual Pan & Triple Urinal: Designed for larger crews and high-traffic sites. This is a serious workhorse of an ablution block.

Unit 8 – M/F Single Pan + Triple Pan & Triple Urinal (6m x 2.9m): One of our largest configurations, built for major construction projects, large events, and long-term deployments.

Unit 9 – 2x Female Pan, 2x Male Pan & 3x Urinal (6m x 2.9m): Maximum capacity with balanced male and female provision. Ideal for large-scale operations and RSE accommodation.

Every unit in our range features H3 plywood flooring, vinyl floor coverings, quality pan and cistern fixtures, stainless steel hand basins, solid panel entry doors with latch and lock sets, and proper lighting. All units come with an Electrical Certificate of Compliance.

Need ablution facilities on a site with no sewer connection? We also supply engineer-certified waste storage tank systems in 4,000L and 6,000L capacities with heavy-duty steel frames with long-life polyethylene tanks that won’t rust.

How to Plan Your Ablution Block Design: Step-by-Step

  1. Count your workers and identify peak usage. The number of workers on site at any one time determines the minimum number of toilets required under NZ regulations.
  2. Determine split between male and female users. If your site has both male and female workers, you are legally required to provide separate facilities. Choose an M/F unit (Units 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9).
  3. Check accessibility requirements as well as if any workers or visitors have mobility impairments, add a Unit 0 disabled access toilet to your configuration.
  4. Assess your site’s utility connections — do you have access to water and power? If not, you may need a waste storage tank (4,000L or 6,000L) and generator or solar power option.
  5. Consider shower facilities, for projects over 2 weeks or sites more than 30 minutes from accommodation, shower facilities (Shower Units 1–5) are strongly recommended for worker welfare and H&S compliance.
  6. Choose hire vs. purchase – Hiring suits defined project timelines while purchase is more cost-effective for ongoing or permanent requirements.
  7. Get a quote and confirm delivery logistics. We deliver nation-wide, confirm your site access for truck delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ablution Block Design

What is the standard size of an ablution block in NZ?

Standard prefab ablution block sizes in New Zealand range from 1.8m x 1.2m for a compact single-pan unit up to 6m x 2.9m for a large multi-facility block. The right size depends on your worker numbers, gender split, and whether shower facilities are included. Castle’s range covers 9 standard sizes plus custom dimensions.

How long does it take to design and build a custom ablution block?

For custom ablution block design and build projects, Castle Portable Buildings typically works to a 4 to 8 week lead time from final design sign-off to delivery, depending on complexity and current production capacity. Simpler modifications to existing designs can often be turned around faster. Contact us early in your project planning phase to confirm timelines.

Can ablution blocks be designed for RSE worker accommodation in NZ?

Yes. Castle Portable Buildings has significant experience designing and building ablution blocks specifically for RSE (Recognised Seasonal Employer) accommodation. RSE ablution facilities need to meet specific standards around worker welfare, capacity, and accessibility. We can design blocks to meet MSD and employer requirements, and deliver NZ-wide to orchard, vineyard, and horticultural sites.

What is included in a standard NZ ablution block?

A standard Castle portable ablution block includes H3 treated plywood flooring, vinyl floor coverings, quality pan and cistern fixtures, stainless steel hand basins, solid entry doors with latch and lock sets, and fluorescent or LED lighting. All units include an Electrical Certificate of Compliance. Disabled-access units include assistance handrails and wheelchair-accessible layouts.

Can I add showers to my ablution block design?

Yes. Castle offers integrated shower and ablution combinations, as well as standalone portable shower units (Shower Units 1–5). Shower configurations include single showers with instant gas hot water (califont) or electric hot water cylinders, dual M/F shower blocks, and triple shower units. Custom shower and ablution combinations can also be designed to your requirements.
