Solar Site Offices NZ: What Do 5kW And 10kW Systems Power?

Every remote site eventually runs into the same problem. There is no mains connection nearby, the generator is loud, someone has to keep it fed with fuel, and the office still needs to run lights, laptops and a jug for smoko. Solar solves most of that, but the question we get asked most often is simple: what will a solar site office run in real conditions?

The honest answer depends on the system size, so it is worth breaking down what 5kW and 10kW setups are realistically good for before you commit to one.

What A Solar Site Office Includes

Our solar site office range is built around the same 6.0 x 2.9 site office and lunchroom shells we use across the business, fitted out with Hyundai solar panels, LiFePO4 batteries and Victron inverter and monitoring gear. You can check the system performance remotely through the Victron VRM app, which earns its keep once a unit is sitting on a site nobody visits every day.

Standard systems run from 5kW up to 20kW of storage, so the starting point is working out where your site sits on that scale.

What A 5kW System Comfortably Runs

A 5kW system suits a small office running the basics. Lighting, laptop charging, phone charging, a small fridge and a jug will run through the day without issue. Add a printer or a second monitor and it still holds up fine, as long as everything is not switched on and drawing power at the exact same moment.

Where 5kW gets tight is heating. A single heater running most of the day, alongside everything else, will pull the battery down faster than most site managers expect, especially through a wet Waikato or Southland winter with limited sun to recharge the panels.

What A 10kW System Adds

Step up to 10kW and the picture changes. This is the point where air conditioning becomes realistic, and our 10kW-and-above systems support a mini split unit for exactly that reason. A 10kW system also gives you more headroom for a larger crew running multiple laptops, a kettle and a microwave without watching the battery percentage all day.

If your office doubles as a small meeting space, or you are running site cameras and communications gear off the same system, 10kW is generally the safer starting point rather than something to grow into later.

When You Need The Hybrid Option

For sites where solar alone is not a safe bet, either because of location, tree cover, or a job that simply cannot afford downtime, we build hybrid systems with an auto-start generator built in. The generator only kicks in when the batteries need it, so you still get the fuel and noise savings of solar most of the time, with backup for the days the sun does not cooperate.

This is the option we tend to recommend for remote worksites where a generator running flat out, day after day, is the only current alternative.

Solar Office Or Solar Lunchroom?

Both the solar office and solar lunchroom come in the same 6.0 x 2.9 footprint, and the power decision is really about how the building gets used rather than which shell you pick. A lunchroom pulling a fridge, a microwave and a jug all through smoko tends to draw harder in short bursts than an office running steadily through the day, so it is worth telling us how the space will be used day to day when we scope the system.

Where Solar Makes The Most Sense

Solar site offices earn their keep fastest on jobs where a generator would otherwise be running for weeks or months at a stretch. Roading projects, forestry, remote infrastructure work and rural sites without a nearby power connection are the obvious fit. Sites with only a few days of work, or easy access to mains power, are usually better off with a standard site office instead.

Hire Or Buy A Solar Building?

Solar offices and lunchrooms are available to hire or buy, the same as the rest of our range. Hiring suits a defined project where the building goes back once the job wraps up. Buying makes more sense if you are running remote sites regularly and want the system paid off rather than rented every time.

Getting The System Right From The Start

The mistake we see most often is sizing the system to the building rather than to how it will be used. A 5kW system is fine for a two-person office running laptops and lighting. Add heating, a bigger crew or camera and comms gear, and 10kW earns its cost back quickly in reliability alone.
